History and tradition in church life can be very important for the continuity of ministry over time. They allow us to reflect upon faithful stewards of the gospel, learn from successful discipleship programs and outreach ministries, and they can provide the church with a sense of comfort and identity. However, sometimes history and tradition can hamper future gospel proclamation, missions, and outreach in a changing world. Likewise, church names, which have typically been appointed based upon location or some less practical criteria, can be either a historical landmark or a future stumbling block.
Over the past two years, Camp Pleasant has witnessed revitalization. There is a new excitement for the deep things of God, His perfect Word, Christ, and the power of the gospel to save. There is a new energy for reaching the lost in our community and throughout the world. There is a renewed dedication to the foundational truths of scripture, new desire to pursue sanctification, and commitment to run the race for which we were created. Our passion is the same as Jonathan Edward’s when he wrote, “God’s purpose for my life was that I have a passion for God’s glory and that I have a passion for my joy in that glory, and that these two are one passion.”
On Sunday night, September 9th, Camp Pleasant Baptist Church voted nearly unanimously to change its name to Gospel Life Community Church. This change will officially take effect on October 28th, 2018.
This new name represents a new direction, a new emphasis, and new life within the body. Yes, we are still proud Southern Baptists! However, this new name signals to the members, and the community, that a new era of gospel-centered ministry has begun within this local congregation. This name is descriptive of the recommitment that we have made to serve our community with the gospel of Jesus Christ.
We praise God for the fruits of the past that have brought us to today. We are prayerful and hopeful that Gospel Life Community Church will bring glory to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as we sojourn into the future.
